The Reliquary of Compassion is one of the five Mountain Reliquaries hidden throughout the map of Ghost of Yōtei, specifically located in the cold, northern region of Teshio Ridge. These puzzles are crucial for fully upgrading the powerful Charm of Mount Yōtei, a high-value defensive item that reduces incoming damage. Unlike the other reliquaries, Compassion has two distinct stages required to complete its riddle.

The riddle inscribed on the central stone pillar reads:

“The mountain took pity on the boy with no home. And lit her fire to keep the boy warm. The wolves gathered around, eyes on the mountain’s hearth.”

Step 1: Light the Hearth (Fire Arrows Required)

The first part of the riddle—”lit her fire to keep the boy warm”—is a unique requirement for this reliquary and involves melting the ice around the area and activating the puzzle mechanisms.

  • Required Tool: You must have Fire Arrows equipped on your Hankyu Bow. If you are low, you can often find a resupply of arrows near the entrance to the reliquary area.
  • Action: Locate the small, icy fire pits (braziers or bundles of wood) at the base of each of the four wolf statues.
  • Execution: Aim and fire a Fire Arrow at the base of each of the four statues to light the hearths. This completes the first stage and makes the statues ready for the alignment phase.

Strong Tip: If you have not yet acquired or upgraded the Hankyu Bow to use Fire Arrows, you must prioritize doing so before attempting this reliquary.

Step 2: Align the Wolves to the Hearth (The Rotation Puzzle)

The second part of the riddle—”The wolves gathered around, eyes on the mountain’s hearth”—directs you to rotate the four wolf statues so they are all facing inward, toward the central stone pillar where the riddle is inscribed. This stage is tricky due to a specific rotation mechanic:

  • The Core Mechanic: When you interact with a wolf statue to rotate it, that statue will turn a certain amount (e.g., 90 degrees or one turn), but the statue adjacent to it will also rotate by a different, usually double, amount (e.g., 180 degrees or two turns). Note: Some guides state the adjacent statue rotates twice, while others say it is the statue to the right that rotates.

The Simplest Solution:

Given the rotating mechanism where turning one statue affects the next, there is a simple, repeatable sequence that ensures all four wolves end up facing the central pillar.

  • Start Point: Choose any one of the four wolf statues to begin.
  • The Sequence: Interact with your chosen statue two times.
  • Continue: Move to the next statue in a counter-clockwise direction and interact with it two times.
  • Repeat: Continue this process, turning each of the remaining statues two times in a counter-clockwise circle.

Solution Summary: Turn each of the four wolf statues exactly two times, moving counter-clockwise around the pillar. This series of double rotations will correct the positions of all four statues, making them all face the central hearth, and successfully solve the Reliquary of Compassion puzzle.

Reward for Completion

Solving the Reliquary of Compassion will trigger a small cutscene and reward you with a permanent upgrade for the Charm of Mount Yōtei. This charm is a high-tier defensive item that improves damage reduction and parry-focused benefits, a crucial asset for navigating the Ghost of Yōtei endgame and surviving difficult boss encounters.

  • Reward: Charm of Mount Yōtei upgrade (or initial unlock).
  • Bonus: Depending on the game’s latest patch, you may also receive the Yōtei’s Mercy Mask cosmetic item.

If you get stuck, remember you can fast travel away and back to the reliquary to reset the statue positions to their original starting state.
