What is R.E.P.O. All About?

R.E.P.O. is an online co-op game where up to six players take on the role of small robots working for a mysterious entity known as “The Taxman.” Your primary objective is to venture into abandoned, monster-infested environments to collect valuable items and safely extract them. These items, ranging from fragile ceramics to heavy pianos, are fully physics-based, meaning you’ll need careful coordination and strategic teamwork to transport them without damage. The more intact the items, the more profit you earn to purchase upgrades and tools.

The game thrives on its atmospheric tension and unpredictable encounters. You’re not just collecting; you’re constantly aware of the terrifying creatures lurking in the shadows. These aren’t just generic jump scare machines; the monsters in R.E.P.O. have distinct behaviors and reactions, often influenced by environmental factors like light and sound. The proximity voice chat feature amplifies the immersion, creating truly chilling moments as you hear your teammates’ panicked whispers or screams fade in and out based on their distance. This focus on teamwork and communication is paramount to survival and success.

How to Play R.E.P.O.: Essential Tips for Survival and Profit

Playing R.E.P.O. effectively requires more than just guts; it demands strategy, spatial awareness, and excellent communication. Here’s a breakdown of how to navigate the terrifying world of R.E.P.O.:

1. Master the Art of Stealth and Movement

Noise is your enemy in R.E.P.O. Running, slamming doors, or carelessly dropping items will attract unwanted attention from the game’s various monstrous inhabitants.

  • Crouch: Crouching is essential. It not only reduces your noise footprint but also turns off your flashlight, making you harder for monsters to spot. Use it to sneak through rooms and hide under objects when danger approaches.
  • Slow and Steady: When carrying fragile items, move slowly and deliberately. Bumping into walls, furniture, or other players can damage your precious cargo, significantly reducing its value.

2. Efficient Item Management

The goal is to extract valuable items, but not all loot is created equal.

  • Prioritize High-Value Items: Learn which items fetch the most money and focus on those. Don’t waste time on low-tier loot unless absolutely necessary for your quota.
  • Utilize Carts: Carts can help transport multiple items, but be mindful not to overload them, as this can slow you down and make you more vulnerable.
  • Extraction Point Mechanics: When you’ve gathered enough loot, head to the extraction point. Ensure all items fit completely inside the designated area. Any part of an item sticking out will be damaged during the extraction process, reducing its value or even leading to a failed extraction. Be sure to exit the extraction point before the walls close in, or you’ll be eliminated!

3. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

R.E.P.O. is designed for cooperative multiplayer. Effective communication and role distribution are key.

  • Proximity Voice Chat: This is your most powerful tool. Use it to call out monster locations, warn teammates of traps, and coordinate item transport. Remember, the volume changes with distance, adding to the tension.
  • Assign Roles (Informally): While the game doesn’t have official classes, you and your team can naturally adopt roles. One player might be a “scout” to check ahead, another a “tanker” to draw aggro (if possible), and others focus on looting and transport.
  • Stick Together (Mostly): Don’t stray too far from your teammates, but also avoid bunching up too tightly, as some monster attacks can hit multiple players. Learn when to create distractions to help a struggling teammate escape.
