Fans eagerly awaiting the continuation of the re-release efforts for the Metal Gear Solid franchise can breathe a sigh of relief. Konami has officially confirmed that Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 is actively in development, with producer Noriaki Okamura stating that the project is “moving forward properly” and is “shaping up to be something enjoyable.”
The update came during a recent Metal Gear Production Hotline at the Tokyo Game Show 2025, where Okamura addressed the long wait since the release of Volume 1 in late 2023. He noted that the team has been diligently working on the collection alongside the production of the highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater remake. While no new details or an official release date were provided, the confirmation is a significant assurance for the community.
The $60 Million Question: Will MGS4 Finally Escape the PS3?
The primary reason for the intense anticipation and the likely source of the extended development time for Volume 2 is the expected inclusion of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. The 2008 finale to Solid Snake’s story remains exclusive to the PlayStation 3, making it the single most difficult game in the core series to access on modern gaming platforms.
The PS3’s notoriously complex architecture makes porting MGS4 a monumental technical challenge, a factor Konami is clearly taking seriously, especially given the somewhat controversial launch state of Master Collection Vol. 1. Okamura’s cautious optimism and plea for fans to “wait just a little longer” strongly suggest that the team is grappling with this very task, aiming to deliver a much smoother launch experience.
What Games Could Make Up Volume 2?
While Konami has not officially revealed the line-up for the second volume, the games missing from the current collection offer a clear indication of what to expect. The consensus among the Metal Gear fan base is a three-game collection focusing on the remaining mainline titles of the saga:
- Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots: The biggest draw. Its presence would complete the Solid Snake storyline collection and be a massive incentive for players on PC, Xbox, and Nintendo platforms. The high CPC (Cost Per Click) value associated with search terms like “MGS4 on PC” and “MGS4 Xbox” highlights the intense commercial interest.
- Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker: This 2010 PSP title is considered a mainline entry and a narrative bridge to MGSV. The high-definition version from the previous HD Collection would likely be the source material, requiring less heavy lifting than MGS4, but its co-op focus adds valuable online multiplayer functionality.
- Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience: Comprising Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain. While these games are already widely available on modern platforms and PC, including them would create a truly definitive Master Collection that contains the entire Hideo Kojima-directed core saga.
There is also speculation about the inclusion of other titles, such as Portable Ops or even the GameCube remake, The Twin Snakes, to sweeten the deal. However, the most commercially viable and narratively necessary combination rests on the successful porting of MGS4.
The move to prioritize getting Volume 2 right, potentially including one of the most demanding ports in modern gaming history, demonstrates Konami’s awareness of the franchise’s enduring critical acclaim and commercial potential. For now, fans must keep their eyes peeled for the “right timing” when the new information will drop.
